The Punisher Review

By Alan Cranford |

Though many games today take elements from existing titles and try to put their own spin on them, this form of imitation isn't always a bad thing. There's something to be said for honing a concept. But the possibility that the new twist on an old formula won't actually improve the overall product certainly exists. The Punisher, a long-running Marvel Comics franchise about a vigilante trying to save the world from being overrun by scumbags, is no stranger to this concept. Back in 1993, the character appeared in an arcade game from Capcom that basically started with Final Fight as a template, and then dropped in The Punisher, Nick Fury, and so on. It wasn't so great. Now, THQ and Volition have delivered a new game with The Punisher name. While it attempts to put its own spin on the third-person shooter genre by adding sometimes-gruesome interrogation sequences, this game is, more or less, Max Payne without the bullet time.

The Punisher's got a bone to pick with criminals everywhere.

Well, perhaps "without the bullet time" isn't entirely accurate. The Punisher can go into "slaughter mode," which slows the game down a bit. Slaughter mode is slightly unique in that, while in it, you'll regain some of your health and drop your guns in favor of a never-ending supply of knives that you can throw into the faces of enemies with stunning accuracy. The other twist to The Punisher is that you can grab any enemy for use as a human shield. Though doing this slows down your movement so much that it's only occasionally useful, once you've grabbed an enemy, you can choose to interrogate him. This brings up a little tension minigame, in which you have to work the mouse just right to keep a line in the proper section of a meter for three seconds. Once you do this, the perp will crack and tell you what he knows, and you'll get a little health boost for your trouble. Most enemies know next to nothing, and interrogating the average bad guy will get you one of only a few phrases per level. But some enemies yield more-interesting results, and these guys are clearly marked with a skull over their head, so you'll know to deal with them dead last.

The Punisher's family was wasted by the mob, and he's out for revenge. Unless you're already a fan of the character, that's all you really have to go on at the outset of the game. The story is told via a series of flashbacks. It seems that Frank Castle's finally been caught at the end of a three-week spree of crime fighting, though the NYPD sees his vigilante tactics in a slightly different light. The game opens with The Punisher being interrogated by the authorities in a little room on Ryker's Island (not to be confused with Rikers Island, the real-life prison). They talk him through the last three weeks, fading out to gameplay at certain points. You start out merely taking on the mob, which happens to be running a crack house and a chop shop in your neighborhood. Eventually, murdering your way up the mob's chain of command leads you to a much bigger terrorist plot. Players will find somewhere between 10 and 15 hours of action here the first time through, with the variance in time largely decided by your skill at getting headshots. The game gives you medals based on your performance, and you can choose to reenter levels with specific challenges to complete, though these additions don't really provide enough reason to go back to the game after completing it.

Frank Castle goes through a handful of different costumes as you play.

You do most of your killing with a variety of firearms. You'll begin with only a pair of pistols, but your arsenal grows quickly. You'll have a handy array of assault rifles, submachine guns, and pistols, as well as some more-specialized weaponry, like a rocket launcher, a flamethrower, and grenades. While some weapons certainly have their place--there are a few spots that are much easier if you're toting a sniper rifle--the minute-to-minute fighting that you'll spend most of the game engaged in doesn't require a lot of firepower as much as it requires a steady hand. You can zoom in with most weapons for more-refined aiming, and headshots are most definitely the order of the day. With the game's fairly boneheaded artificial intelligence constantly standing still, or, even better, taking cover behind benches and other items that leave most of their body exposed, most players shouldn't have much trouble when it comes to ringing up headshots.

Even if you don't seem to be able to nail enemies in their heads, the game makes killing them startlingly easy. The Punisher is supposed to be a superhero of sorts, so it's not too far-fetched that most bullets barely take anything off your life bar, but it's so minimal that you can cruise through most of the game by running up to each enemy and pressing the "quick kill" button, which rolls out a brief animation of the enemy in question being shot, being stabbed, or having his neck broken. Sure, you'll take a few shots while you run up to each foe, but since you can just interrogate a couple of guys to get that health back, you're rarely in need of health on the game's normal difficulty setting. The hard setting, as you might expect, limits your ability to do this a bit.

The Punisher's action is very standard, fitting right into the third-person shooter genre. The only thing that really sets it apart, in terms of gameplay, is that it has a number of specific kill animations. You have a handful of quick-kill moves and four different standard methods of interrogation. These don't change throughout the game, and they get repetitive very quickly. In an effort to change things up, some spots in the levels can be used for special interrogations. These spots are clearly marked, and usually involve you using a piece of the environment to loosen a foe's lips. Many of these simply have you dangling your enemy over a ledge, but there are some unique ones, like slamming an enemy's head in the door of a jeep, threatening to stick a guy's head into a ceiling fan, shocking a man with an exposed electrical wire, and so on.

The Punisher is sort of a one-trick pony. Once you've seen all of the interrogation animations, there's not much else to do.

It's nice that the game offers these, but the payoff for actually going through with the plan and killing your subject is really underwhelming. The game's rated M, but for some reason the camera quickly zooms out from the action when you decide to finish an enemy off in a special interrogation sequence. It also changes to black and white, almost as if the game doesn't want to show you such a bloody finale without heavily filtering. Yet, after the fact, it doesn't have a problem showing you a dead body that happens to be missing its head, for example. And many cutscenes are filled with dripping blood. Whether the black-and-white effect was a stylistic choice or one aimed to censor some of the game's gorier scenes isn't so important. Either way, it takes away from the impact of these sequences.

The Punisher is a good-looking game, but with some better texture work, it could have looked much better. You'll encounter some awfully blurry-looking textures here and there that make the environments look a little bland. At least the game is pretty good about giving you a variety of environments--many sequences take place in fairly tight indoor settings, but you'll find some larger outdoor arenas as well. While the environments may be varied, there really isn't much to do in them beyond running around with your guns blazing. The extent of your environmental interaction, beyond the special interrogations, consists of being able to shoot bottles off a bar. Yet you can pump bullet after bullet into a television set without breaking it. This makes the game's locales feel flat and stale. Also, the game's camera isn't really up to the task of presenting the action when you're in tight corridors. One level in particular puts you on a ship, and the tight corridors and small rooms make it nearly impossible to see what's going on around you. The one standout part of The Punisher's graphics is its selection of character models. The standard troops look good, and The Punisher himself looks really great, with similar levels of detail going into the models for many of the story's other major characters and bosses. While the PC version is definitely the best-looking of the three available versions, the interrogations are much easier to do with an analog controller in the console versions than with the mouse.

If you're good at getting headshots, you'll find most of this game to be pretty easy.

Good in-game sound in a shooter generally comes down to having gunfire that sounds appropriately tough. The Punisher doesn't do this especially well. While your gunfire sounds at least passable, enemy fire is quiet at times and doesn't seem to always be positioned correctly. As an example, in one sequence you're raiding an island, and there's a man positioned behind a turret, firing off rounds in your direction. While you'll see tracer fire heading your way, and you'll even have a clear view of the turret, you won't actually be able to hear the gun firing until you get much closer to its position. The sound in the cutscenes is also poorly mixed. Voices usually come through loud and clear, but the rest of the action sounds awfully flat. Certain actions, like a man slamming his hands down on a table, don't make any sound at all. The game has a great deal of voice acting in it, though most of it is a little flat.

The Punisher tries to break out of the third-person shooter blueprint by offering sometimes-gory interrogation sequences, but these portions don't do enough to change what is otherwise a very by-the-numbers action game. If you're fan of the character, you'll probably get some enjoyment out of running around and torturing enemies, but the lack of variety here causes this portion of the game to wear thin fast. Beyond that, you're better off looking elsewhere for your third-person action needs.

                                        (C) TIPS
    ###############################################################################

Be sure to click "UPDATE" in the game to make sure that you are running the
most recent version [v1.00 as of this writing] of the game.

If you have to interrogate enemies, knock them out afterwards with "N" instead
of killing them. This way you'll get a few points instead of LOSING some
    points.

Use the camera to look around corners and over objects, this way you can see
enemies before they see you and plan accordingly.

When using cover [eg: a box or wall] and dual guns you have to be careful of
which gun you fire with. If your right side is exposed then it makes no sense
to shoot with your left gun, you'll just hit your cover and waste ammo.

You usually unlock challenge mode for a level once you beat it. Bronze medals
are the ONLY medals you can get on easy difficulty. Punishment mode is usually
unlocked with silver medals, and you get these on normal difficulty or higher.

Kill points [gold spots on the floor] give you 1000 points, so they're
well-worth using if you drag an enemy to one.

DO NOT turn off slaughter mode once it starts, because the bar will drain
completely if you do this. Instead let it drain on it's own as you kill people
so that it lasts as long as possible.

Although you move much slower and can only use one gun at a time, you are MUCH
harder to hit when you use an enemy as a bullet shield.

    Purse-Snatching
    ---------------

Walk down the alley and follow the thug as he tries to steal a purse from the
woman to your right. Since you don't have any weapons yet you need to get up
close and personal to teach this guy a lesson. Press "E" once you get close to
grab the enemy and hold him close.

At this point you can walk around with the enemy and actually use him to take
damage from you if you wish. Instead though, press "E" a second time to enter
    interrogation mode.

Now you can press A, S or D to interrogate the enemy by choking him, smashing
his face against the ground or punching him respectively. Lets push A for now
    to try choking the guy.

The large meter that you see has two parts to it, the lower [and larger part]
represents how scared the enemy is. There is also a very thin section at the
top that shows the enemy's health. The goal is to make the enemy scared enough
to talk, but without killing him in the process. Use the mouse and slowly move
it up to start choking the enemy. You should see a moving meter start to fill
the fear gauge and a timer starts to count as it enters the yellow section.
Keep the fear in this yellow section for three seconds to "break" the enemy,
then he tells you whatever he knows [which may not be a whole hell of a lot].
Once you have broken an enemy you are free to use him as a shield, kill him or
set him free, it's up to you.

After you make your choice you should talk to the woman that you saved to get
some points and some health [ALWAYS remember to talk to the victims that you
    save].

Continue down the alleys for a bit and watch as some thugs in a nearby building
taunt you. Turn the corner up ahead and go down the stairs, then enter the
    building.

    --------
    Floor 01
    --------

Head for the thug with the skull above his head, enemies with these markers
have important information. You should DEFINITELY try to interrogate these
enemies and get that information out of them. Once you've interrogated this
guy you can knock him out with "N".

At this point another thug comes looking for this guy so quickly run up to him
and interrogate him before knocking him out. Continue down the hall and pick
up the shotgun from the table by pressing "G", then climb up the stairs and
press "Q" to kick the door down.

    --------
    Floor 02
    --------

Shoot the pair of enemies ahead of you and pick up their guns with "G", then
use the dividing wall for cover as you shoot an enemy to your right. Ignore
his ammo for now and use the dividing wall and sinks on the left side of the
room to protect you. Kill two more enemies just beyond the sinks, then pick up
all the guns and ammo. You can use "T" at this point to switch between your
    pistols and shotgun as needed.

Take the right door of the two ahead of you and ignore the civilian to your
right, then take out the enemy to your left. Walk through the door that's
closest to the civilian WITHOUT kicking it open, then shoot the group of
enemies in the next room as you crouch for cover. You'll probably have an
easier time if you use the pistols rather than the shotgun and you might even
want to use fine aiming [press "F"], it's up to you though.

Collect all the ammo and enter the next hallway, then use fine aiming with your
pistols as you shoot a pair of enemies through the hole in the right wall.
Follow the hall around and interrogate an enemy, then grab all the ammo and
head through the next door without kicking it in.

Shoot the shotgun enemy and take his gun, then switch to your pistols and shoot
a group of enemies in the next room. Grab all the ammo and the shotgun if you
dropped it earlier, then go through the next door and climb the stairs beyond
    to reach the first checkpoint.

    --------
    Floor 03
    --------

Quickly use fine aiming and take out the trio of enemies through the wall
before they kill a nearby civilian. If you want you can also grab an enemy
with "E" and drag him over one of the golden kill spots. Press "Q" on these
spots to kill the enemy in a different way. Talk to the civilian [if he's
alive] after the fight to get some health and points, then go through the next
    door.

Head right and shoot the enemy, then talk to the civilian and go through the
right door. Talk to the civilian here then return to the previous room and
head through the left door. Grab the nearby enemy and drag him over the white
interrogation spot, then press "E" to use the window for a special
interrogation. You can set the enemy free if you want, but he doesn't do what
    he says.

Enter the next room and shoot a pair of enemies, then grab their ammo and
switch to pistols. Go through the next door and turn right, then use fine
aiming to take care of the hostage situation. Talk to the pair of civilians
and ignore the trio of doors if you want to hear some others civilians wonder
if you're real or not. Turn your attention back to the doors and go through
the left one to talk to a horny civilian, then return to the previous room and
    go through the right door.

Quickly leave the room once the door opens and use the wall as cover, then use
fine aiming and pistols to easily take out the group of enemies. Collect all
the ammo and open the door to your right, then climb the stairs.

    --------
    Floor 04
    --------

Open the pair of doors and shoot a trio of enemies, then collect the ammo and
go through the nearby door to shoot two more enemies. Return to the previous
room after taking the ammo, then go through a gap in the wall to reach the next
    room.

Shoot a few enemies here and watch for the running civilian, then kill some
more enemies by a few upturned tables. Take the ammo and use fine aiming to
shoot an enemy on the balcony nearby, then collect the ammo and press "E" near
    the ladder before climbing up.

    --------
    Floor 05
    --------

Switch to pistols and open the door, then use fine aiming to carefully shoot
the enemies. Take the ammo and go through the right door, then use fine aiming
to easily take out the trio of enemies on your left. Talk to the civilian and
open the double-doors, then use pistols and fine aiming to kill the group of
    about six enemies.

Open the next door behind the TV and approach the enemy once he stops shooting,
then grab him and use the nearby interrogation spot on him. Get the info that
you need from the enemy, then bring him back up and knock him out to end the
level. [this gets you more points than if you let him fall to his death].

the enemy as he runs away, then talk to the receptionist. Go down the hall and
take the stairs up to the next floor.

    --------
    Floor 02
    --------

Use fine aim to take out a group of enemies here, then take all the ammo and
head for the next door. Switch to your pistols and use this doorway as cover
[and for reloading] as you pick off a large group of enemies below with fine
aim. Follow the walkway as you shoot any leftover enemies, then climb down the
ladder and kill a few more if need be [one might be hiding in the tunnel].
Collect all the ammo and climb the stairs for some more, then return to the
floor and switch your pistols for an uzi [machine pistol]. Now head through
the nearby door to reach the first checkpoint.

    ---------
    Warehouse
    ---------

Open the door and shoot a pair of enemies, then take all the ammo and go
through the right door ahead of you. Shoot a small group of enemies here and
use the interrogation spot by the drill to get some info out of the important
enemy. Set him free and let him lead you to the next door, but don't follow
too closely. Shoot the group of enemies along the way and take their ammo,
then catch up with your friend and talk to him before going through the next
    door.

Shoot one of the enemies to your left and interrogate the other by using the
water, then go through the next door. Use the wall and boxes for cover as you
shoot through a small group of enemies, then take their ammo and go through
    another door.

Crouch as you walk past the windows and head through the door, then shoot a
pair of enemies. Kill a trio beyond the wall and watch for an enemy up high.
You'll probably be running low on uzi ammo, so swap them out for some pistols
as you snipe the enemy up high with fine aiming. Turn the corner and kill
about four enemies, then grab the ammo and kill three more up ahead. Activate
the forklift to take care of an enemy, then crouch by the closest car as you
snipe a group of enemies. Shoot a pair up high from here, then climb the
stairs and finish off another one before going through the next door.

Go down the hall and shoot a trio of enemies, then take all the ammo and follow
the hall through the next door. Ignore the civilian and enter the next room,
then carefully kill the enemy with the hostage and shoot up his buddies.
Collect the ammo and kill another small group among the pillars to your left,
then take their ammo and go through the double-doors ahead to reach the next
    checkpoint.

    --------
    Junkyard
    --------

Drag this clown to the ledge to interrogate him, then do what you want with
    him.

Climb down the ladder to your right and kill an enemy up ahead, then take a few
steps and kill some more to your right [including one up high, shoot the
explosive barrels if you want]. Take all the ammo and continue along the path,
then shoot up another group of enemies [you can use more barrels to help you]
and grab their ammo. Shoot a trio nearby and head left along the path as you
    enter the next building.

Shoot a small group of enemies down here and one up high, then take the ammo
and go through the door at the top of the stairs. Go down the stairs on the
other side and climb a nearby ladder, then use the switch to drop a car on a
    group of enemies.

Go back down the ladder and kill a group of enemies as you watch out for the
guy by the turret up high. Hug the walls and objects near this guy so he can't
hit you, then kill a few more enemies in windows and similar hiding spots.
Snipe the guy by the turret when you have a clear shot, then kill any remaining
enemies and get in the car with the blue cursor on it to end the level.

This level is very short, so what you want to do is get very close to an enemy
and pull out your gun. Quickly grab the enemy to use him as a shield, then
unload into the rest of the thugs. Switch to something that you can use for
fine aiming [like pistols or uzis], then use headshots on Bobby to kill him.
It works very well to use a wall for cover and only shoot with your free, open
hand. Once Bobby is dead, the level is over.

Shoot the one enemy and interrogate his important friend by the wood-chipper.
Toss him inside instead of listening to his lies, then go through the nearby
doors and shoot an enemy ahead of you.

Kill his friends to your right and take their ammo, then kill another group of
enemies in the next room. Take all the ammo and kill two more enemies, then
open the doors behind them. Shoot the enemy ahead of you and a group to your
left, then collect all the ammo and swap your shotgun for a pair of assault
    rifles.

Carefully snipe the guy on the roof until he leaves you alone, then shoot up
the group nearby and interrogate the important guy [you may need to shoot a
couple more enemies]. Do what you want with the guy once he talks, then take
the ammo and go through the nearby doors for a checkpoint.

    -------
    Offices
    -------

Go right down the hall and enter the men's bathroom, then interrogate the guy
there [use the toilet for it if you want]. Set the guy free and run through
the door in the women's bathroom while he distracts the enemies [I think this
is the first time an enemy has ACTUALLY helped you when you set him free].
Turn left and shoot the enemy behind the glass, then go through the LEFT door
    by the barricade.

Shoot the enemies around the large table here, then pick up all their ammo and
go through the door. Head right here and kill a small group of enemies, then
enter the hall beyond. Kill another enemy here and follow the hall to a set of
    doors and another checkpoint.

    ----------
    Rainforest
    ----------

Approach the lone enemy and use the piranhas to interrogate him, then drag him
with you as you climb the stairs. Shoot the enemies while they're cautious and
collect their ammo, then drag your friend up the next set of stairs. Kill a
few more enemies and head for the bridge, then shoot an enemy on the other side
and one hidden to your right. Cross the bridge with your friend and kill a
group of enemies on the other side, then work your way down to the ground and
    enter the temple there.

Follow the path as you shoot through the enemies and eventually come to an
Aztec altar. Use the kill point here if you want, then go through the nearby
    doors for the next checkpoint.

    --------
    Wildlife
    --------

Shoot the pair of enemies before they kill the hostage, then talk to him for
some health and points. Walk through the door and shoot a few more enemies
then shoot the guy up ahead until he backs off. Ignore the stone arch unless
you want to taste an explosion, then go left through a gate instead. Shoot the
enemies along the way and either go through the door or down the stairs to
    reach the ground.

Shoot more enemies here as you follow the path, then go through the
double-doors and another set beyond them. Shoot more enemies here and talk to
a civilian, then kill the rest of the enemies. Talk to the civilian again once
the enemies are all dead to open the gate and reach the next checkpoint.

    -----------
    Avian House
    -----------

Talk to the civilian and go through the gate ahead of you, then shoot a group
of enemies and carefully free the hostage. This is the first hostage that's
actually armed and he now helps fight with you. Pick up the ammo and go down
the hall to your left, then through the door at the end.

Kill a small group of enemies out here, then enter the next set of doors. Kill
the large group of enemies here [use slaughter mode to help if you have it] and
pick up all the ammo, then go through the double-doors to reach another
    checkpoint.

    Aquariums
    ---------

Shoot a group of enemies beyond the doors and kill another one between the
aquariums up the ramp, then take the ammo and go down a ramp in this section.
Kill a pair of enemies on the left side of the next ramp, then shoot a trio
through the nearby doors. Grab the important guy and interrogate him [with the
electric eel tank if you want], then use him as a shield while you go through
    the doors.

Shoot enemies to your right and ahead of you, then go right to shoot a few
more. Collect all the ammo and head through the doors just ahead of you. Kill
the enemies as you go clockwise around the room, then shoot Bushwacker and
dodge his rockets until he runs away. Go through the nearby door and shoot a
few more enemies, then use all three panels to open a cage and a door.

Snipe a few enemies from the doorway, then walk through to start a 3-minute
timer. Kill a few more enemies and climb the ladder ahead of you [stay out of
the water], turn right and go through the door past the control switch. Use
the valve beyond to drain the water and stop the timer, then go down the ladder
and talk to Joan to finish the level.

Press "E" when the message appears to burst out of the coffin, then start
shooting and don't stop until everyone in the room stops moving. Go through
the open door next and shoot up the enemies by all the coffins [use the
kill/interrogation spots if you want], then kill more enemies as they enter the
room. Collect all the ammo afterwards and swap your pistols for uzis, then go
    through the nearby double-doors.

Ignore the civilian and shoot a pair of enemies in the elevator, then kill a
trio of enemies in the next room. Go through the white door and down the
stairs, then shoot a small group of enemies as they enter the next room. Clear
out the room beyond of about 7 enemies, then take all the ammo and enter the
    next room.

Shoot a group of enemies [mainly to your right] and grab the important guy to
your left, then interrogate him [use the cremation chamber if you want, though
it's tough to control] and enter the next room. Shoot a couple of enemies here
and use the switch in the far corner to open a secret door, then approach the
red square and set a bomb with "E".

Quickly run back to the cremation room and shoot another group of enemies, then
take the ammo and continue along this path as you shoot up a small group in the

the next door to your left, then take care of the hostage situation.

Approach the next door and interrogate the important guy that comes to you,
then set him free and watch as he runs to the next room. He betrays you, but
since you places a remote charge on him you can press "E" now to detonate it
and take out a small group. Kill the remaining enemies in here [use the piano
to interrogate one of them if you want] and head through the door to your left.
Kill a few enemies here and enter the left door for some ammo, then return to
the hall and take the right door. Kill a couple more enemies here and take
their ammo, then approach the stairs to reach the next checkpoint.

During this boss fight you run around in an attic while basic enemies keep
appearing. You should kill the basic enemies in your way for their ammo and
guns, but otherwise keep your eye out for Eddie and shoot him as much as you
    can.

Obviously head shots work best, but as long as you keep shooting him you'll do
well. Also MAKE SURE you remember to use slaughter mode, because it definitely
makes things easier for you. Once Eddie is finally dead, the level is over.

Leave this room and use the nearby enemy as a shield, then enter the next room
and kill a small group of enemies. Ignore all the doors in here except for the
one at the end of the hall by the red valves. Approach this door and shoot the
enemy that comes through, then enter the room and kill some more enemies.
Check the rest of the doors here to find a few more enemies, then press "E" to
open the green door in one of these rooms. Interrogate the guy [try the
furnace if you want, it's hard though] behind the door, then find the civilian
in the cage and talk to him.

Return to the main part of this room and look for the picture of peppers with a
blue cursor on it. Press "E" to turn this picture and reveal a passage behind
it, then enter the passage. Go through either door and kill the group of
enemies in the gambling room, then take the next door to your right.
Interrogate the guy here [but KEEP HIM ALIVE AS A SHIELD] and pick up the key
from the desk by pressing "E", then take the ammo and use the panel to unlock
    the security gate.

Go back through the passage and shoot up a small group of enemies, then head
for the cage and press "E" by the lock to open it up. Talk to the guy and kill
him, then head right in this main hall to reach the area that had the gate
before. Walk along the passage and kill a small group of enemies. Watch as an

Kill the group of enemies here [try the kill spots if you want] and interrogate
the important guy [use the fireplace if you want to], then drag him with you as
you enter the next room. Aim carefully and shoot up this small group, then
follow the hall and enter the door to your right.

Kill a few enemies here and some more through the door to your right, then
interrogate the important guy [try the knives if you want, it's based on how
fast you shake the mouse] and drag him with you to the next room [through the
single door]. Push the safe in the corner with "E", then enter the passage.
Open the safe in here with "E" and take the flashbangs, then return to the room
with the knives and go through the double-doors. Kill a small group of enemies
and take the ammo, then go through either door and down the hall to reach the
    next checkpoint.

Kill the enemy to your right and shoot another one by the barricade, then go
through the double-doors and shoot an enemy by a barricade. Enter the next
room and shoot a large group of enemies, then interrogate the important guy to
find out about a switch. Head for the pool table and pull on the small yellow
lamp nearby, then enter the passage beyond and pick up the key there.

Leave the passage and take the door by the right end of the bowling lane, then
head left and unlock the door there. Kill the enemies inside and grab all the
ammo [this is a great place to come back to when you need more ammo or other
guns], then kill a large wave of enemies in the room with the stairs. Grab the
ammo and climb the stairs, then head right and unlock the right door to find
    another armoury.

Stock up and go through the left door, then ignore the double-doors and go
through the left door of the two nearby. Shoot a few enemies from behind as
you re-enter the hallway, then head left and shoot up another group of enemies.
Head right through the double doors as you waste a group of enemies, then
interrogate the important guy [use the spear if you want]. Grab the ammo and
approach the doors, then press "E" to reach the next checkpoint.

    -------
    Library
    -------

Here you get to fight Bushwacker and it's a pretty annoying fight. It's
similar to the fight with Eddie since it has lots of enemies appearing as you
try to get rid of Bushwacker. For the majority of the fight you want to chase
down Bushwacker and shoot him in the head. This way you deal maximum damage
and should knock his glasses off as well.

At this point you can start using flash bangs to stun Bushwacker, which allows
you to hit him easier. Just make sure that you remember to look away from the
flashbang before it goes off, or Frank'll get confused.

Once you've dealt enough damage, Bushwacker will threaten you and then start
firing rockets. The rockets move VERY fast and also deal a lot of damage, so
you have to be pretty careful. The pillars are good for cover, but you need to
make sure that you're not too close to them. If you're right up against a
pillar then the blast from a rocket can still damage you, plus the pillar
catches fire afterwards. Pretty much you want to block a rocket with a pillar,
then quickly fire off a few shots at Bushwacker before hiding once more and
repeating the process until he dies.

and hit the switch in the clock, then enter the passage beyond and use fine aim
to get the two sprinklers in the ceiling working. Once the fire's out you can
use the panel by the computer to disable security, then return to the previous
room and go through the security door by the bed.

Shoot any enemies nearby and ignore the left path, then turn right and shoot
all three sprinklers above to get rid of the flames. Follow the passage and
shoot the group of enemies up ahead [quick kill the tougher guy on the left
side of the room], then enter the next room and kill Ma on the gold kill spot
    to end the level.

at the top of the ramp, then run up the ramp and head right.

Shoot the enemies in here and interrogate the important guy, then go through

Shoot the enemies through the next door up ahead and go through another green
door, then climb down the ladder and shoot a few enemies. Ignore the enemy
that's got Black Widow until she breaks free by herself, then shoot up the rest
of them. Interrogate the important guy [try the spot by the truck if you want]
and use the panel on the left side of the large green door to open it. Grab
the ammo and walk inside the building to reach another checkpoint and a boss.

    Tank
    ----

Run to the left or right wall when the battle starts and pick up the grenade
launcher there, then take some ammo from the box. Use the large boxes for
cover if you need to, but otherwise fill the tank with rockets. This takes
care of the tank very quickly and also ends the level.

    On Deck
    -------

Shoot the enemies [including some up high] and interrogate the important guy
[try the hook if you want], then go through the middle door. Head down the
stairs and open the door at the bottom, then shoot up a small group and go
through the doorway in the far right corner. Shoot a small group of enemies
here and interrogate the important guy [try the saw or drill], then open the
left tool chest for some ammo.

Go through the next door and climb down two ladders, then enter the next room
and shoot up a group of enemies. Interrogate the important guy [try the
turbine if you want] and plant a bomb on the spot with the cursor beside the
turbine. Climb the stairs to the walkway and follow it around to the next
room, then go left along the walkway and through the door there.

Kill the lone enemy and plant the second bomb, then leave the room and shoot
enemies on the floor below. Go down the stairs and through a few doors to
    reach the first checkpoint.

    --------
    Intruder
    --------

Take either path as you work your way through here [a bullet shield helps a
lot though], then kill the enemies that burst out of many of the doors along
the way. Enter the next room when you come to it and climb the right set of
stairs, then go through both doors and work your way through another similar
section. It helps to use a bullet shield, but otherwise when you see a misty
hallway you're almost through. Go through the door after the mist and climb
the stairs to reach the next checkpoint.

    -----------
    Flesh Trade
    -----------

Snipe the enemies up here and take either route before climbing down the stairs
to finish off more. Interrogate the important guy [try the forklift] and talk
to the women by the box with the cursor, then climb back up stairs and use the
blue button to drop the cargo. Head back to the door where you entered this
area and go to the next room beyond, then shoot up the enemies and check the
small rooms for ammo along the way.

Interrogate the important guy and set him free so he'll lead you to a
flamethrower, then kill him and try it out. Personally I don't find it all
that useful [cool, but not effective] so I swapped it back for my old gun.
Continue along the passage and kill more enemies along the way, then go through
the next door and climb the stairs.

Shoot the flamethrower enemy and continue along the next section as you shoot a
series of enemies. Eventually you come to a hostage situation with the captain
of the ship, simply shoot him in the head like any other similar situation and
    the level ends.

This big guy slowly stomps towards you and either punches you directly, or

wait for him to pound the ground. At this point you want to get behind him and
press "E" to grab hold. When you manage this you need to walk over to the

rifle to take out an enemy at the top of each. Switch to your other guns and
take out some ground forces inside each tower [grab grenades from the right
one], then use the switch inside the left tower to open the gates.

Head through the gates and shoot a small group of enemies, then cross the
bridge and shoot a few more as you follow the path and reach the first
    checkpoint.

    --------
    Ten-Four
    --------

Use the rocks and stumps for cover as you shoot out some enemies and snipers,
then take a sniper rifle if you can to finish off the rest. Enter the
double-doors and shoot a pair of enemies to your right, then shoot the rest of
the enemies and interrogate the important guy [try the ceiling fan if you
want]. Take the door at the far right corner and shoot a few more enemies,
then follow the hallway beyond and shoot more enemies in the next room
    [including one up high].

Go to the back of the room and kick the gate open for some ammo and a rocket
launcher, then return to the previous room and look for the next door. Shoot a
sniper just beyond it and a group of enemies on both sides of you, then follow
the path left and use the trees for cover as you shoot some more enemies. Grab
one of them if you can and try the kill spot to see the snake take care of him,
otherwise continue down the path and shoot the explosive barrels in the nearby
    building.

Shoot the remaining enemies and interrogate the important guy [try the car door
if you want], then enter the storage room and grab explosives from the shelf.
Open the locker by one of the doors for some grenades, then continue down the
path outside. Place the explosives on the tank nearby, then run like hell away
from it. Once the explosives go off you will reach the next checkpoint.

    --------
    Teamwork
    --------

Use the trees and boxes as cover from the turret, then shoot the other enemies
and work your way closer to the turret. Rush the guy once you're really close
and then interrogate him [try the turret if you want]. Continue down the path
and kill another group of enemies, then watch an explosion and meet up with a
    friend.

Shoot your way into the compound and use the cover to your left to get close
enough to shoot the guy by the turret. Wait until your friend opens the door,
then shoot your way through this building to the other side. Kill a few
enemies and watch out for the turret, then use the objects to your right for
cover as you take out that turret. Enter the area to your left with the large
rock and shoot up a few enemies, then go through the green door to reach the
    next checkpoint.

    -----------------
    Be All You Can Be
    -----------------

Shoot up the enemies in the next room and interrogate the important guy to your
left [try the electricity if you want] to get a code [48326]. Continue along
and shoot up some more enemies, then use the code on the door to your right and
    stock up on ammo inside.

Return to the halls and keep shooting your way through the enemies, then kill a
group in the lunch room and head right through a door to find some more
targets. Shoot through the weight room and head for the top of the stairs to
    reach the next checkpoint.

    --------------------------
    I'll Take The High Road...
    --------------------------

Shoot the enemies on the ground and some up high, then run up the stairs and
open the elevator. Run inside and hit the button to ride it, then exit and go
down the stairs to get outside. Enter the gondola and pick up the sniper
rifle, then hit the button to get moving. Now zoom in on the area up ahead and
snipe enemies behind the other gondola, in both towers [high and low] and
especially on the ground. Keep looking for targets and eliminating them
because these guys are trying to shoot down your gondola. Once the gondola
makes it safely to the other side you will reach the next checkpoint.

    -----------
    The Russian
    -----------

Get out of the gondola and go through the gate to start another fight with the
Russian. You can get ammo from a box in the room to your right, otherwise you
want to find the Russian on the walkways above you.

The Russian runs to one of many piles of explosive barrels and gets into
position, he then lights the barrel on fire and throws it at you. In order to
damage him you need to shoot the barrel in his hands AFTER he lights it on
    fire.

Once you've done this about three times you have to deal with other enemies
fighting you, but they're not hard to beat. Just shoot one or two of them and
get back to sniping the Russian's barrels.

Once you drain half of his health, the Russian jumps down to your level while
on fire. There are still other enemies around to annoy you, but the Russian is
your main concern. Simply let him follow you and watch when he gets close to
any of the piles of barrels. Shoot one of those barrels as soon as it lights
on fire to damage the Russian, then let him chase you to the next pile and
    repeat the process.

Once the Russian finally stops moving you can kill any enemies that are still
bothering you [try the kill-spot under the missile]. Go through the door under
the missile and kill Kreigkopf, then use the panel nearby to end the level.

    Sound The Alarm
    ---------------

Ignore the two guards ahead of you and go right instead, then talk to the lone
guard there and use him as a bullet shield. Once the alarm sounds you can get
through the left door nearby. Shoot a few enemies beyond and store your C4 in
the little compartment by the wall, then go through the green door and head
    down two sets of stairs.

Walk in the hallway a little bit until you hear someone say "NOW!", then take
cover and pick off a small group of enemies. Use the boxes for cover from the
turrets up ahead, then shoot a few enemies and run for the important guy.
Interrogate him to get a code, then use that code on the nearby panel to
deactivate the turrets. Head through the door beyond the turrets to reach the
    first checkpoint and a boss.

    --------
    Bullseye
    --------

Bullseye runs around and throws knives at you, otherwise he'll try to punch you
if he gets close enough. Grab the ammo from the box nearby and get in close to
Bullseye, then back-off a bit as he misses his punch and shoot a few rounds
into his head. It doesn't take much to get him to run away, then you can ride
the elevator to the next checkpoint.

Shoot the group of enemies ahead of you and watch for a smaller group that
busts through the right wall. Interrogate the important guy [try the engine if
you want] and head through the double-doors, then drop through one of the
farther holes in the next room and find some cover.

Shoot up the group of enemies and interrogate the important guy [try the
nailgun if you want], then grab ammo from the box nearby and head through the
double-doors that don't have yellow tape on them. Turn around and return to
the previous room to fight Bullseye once more.

Simply chase him and shoot him in the head like before until he runs away, then
go through the double-doors again and into the next room. Shoot up enemies on
this floor, the floor below and the floor above through a small hole in the
ceiling. Interrogate the important guy [try the elevator shaft if you want]
and go through the double-doors, then start climbing the stairs and shoot
enemies on the stairs and around you as you climb. Head through the doors at
the top and go right to reach the next checkpoint.

    ---------------
    Target Practice
    ---------------

Go through the doors ahead of you to meet up with Bullseye once more, then use
the same strategy to drain his health. The only thing you need to watch out
for is the fact that he uses a gun sometimes instead of his knives, but
otherwise the battle is still pretty straightforward. Once you beat Bullseye,
    you reach the next checkpoint.

    --------------
    A Common Enemy
    --------------

Kill a group of enemies [try the kill spot by the bench] and return to the
elevator to reach the next checkpoint.

    ---------------
    Out With A Bang
    ---------------

Shoot the enemies here and work your way over to the spot where you stashed
your C4 at the beginning of this level [near the first green door]. Take your
C4 out of the compartment here and head towards the turrets. Use the pillars
for cover as you shoot the guys behind the turrets, then plant your C4 on the
red spot nearby and get to a safe distance. After the explosion you just need
to walk through the doors to end the level.
