About The Game

Ah, the life of the young single person ... Singles – Flirt up your Life is the simulation of the 'exciting' relationship between Mike and Linda. The live-in twosome are coupled as roommates at the beginning of the game, though the rest is up to you as the gamer ... They share an apartment, which means that the gameplay has all of the normal routines of cooking, cleaning, going to work, chatting, hanging out, and watching TV. But as the night wears on and the conversation gets deeper, who knows how things will turn! You'll have your chance to play both God and Cupid in this intimate simulation game that also features 15 other characters to meet and engage with.

Singles: Flirt up your Life Review

By Jimmy Goldstein |

Every once in a while someone writes in asking us what kinds of games get Adults Only ratings. When you look at the ESRB ratings, AO games make up a smaller-than-ridiculously-small portion of the overall PC gaming catalog. At least, that's the way it is here in the US where bleeding viscera are considered less obnoxious than a naked pair of breasts. The European market is just as arbitrary but, thankfully, skewed the opposite direction to accept sex much easier than it would violence. Thank god we live in a day where the worldwide web and lax import laws give perverts like me access to both markets.

Witness the latest cross-Atlantic offering, Singles: Flirt Up Your Life. Like a used copy of Oui sent over to the States in exchange for a pistol, Singles: Flirt Up Your Life is a novel thing in the PC gaming market: a game about sex. It uses a Sims-like approach, placing two people in an apartment and challenging the player with managing their lives. Though there are no explicit goals in the game, the idea is to get these two roommates romantically involved and watch them do it.

This game is so much like your real life it scares you.

The game's challenge essentially boils down to this: If you and your roommate of the opposite sex were the only two people left on earth and only ever left the apartment to go to work, would you eventually have sex? In even the most desperate cases (and keep in mind I know many of the personal habits of the editors), I'm sure the answer is "yes."

The five men and women you'll be pairing here represent various types. The career-minded manager guy might find himself paired with the cold-on-the-surface-boiling-on-the-inside lady scientist. Or the slick ladies-man might move in with the shy girl-next-door. Each pairing requires you to intuit the types of interactions that each would most enjoy. Beyond that, the pairing of a messy and clean Single creates its own problems.

There are two homosexual characters in the game, one of each sex, and these can be paired with the corresponding characters used in the straight game. Practically, there's no real change in terms of gameplay here. Even the sex seems to work the same. Personally, I think it's more fun to put the gay guy and lesbian together and see if you can make it spark. Strangely, though this inclusion of gay and lesbian perspectives makes the game seem pretty broadminded, the fact that all 12 characters are Caucasian doesn't admit much in the way of diversity.

Though your roommates share the same types of needs and seek the same types of satisfaction found in The Sims, much of the bathroom-going, food-cooking, nap-taking action is automated. You can still direct each individual shower if you wish -- trying to get two people up and out the door in time for work will almost require it -- but the real emphasis here is on building up the various types of relationships that exist.

Singles relate on different levels -- as friends, as romantic partners, as lovers -- and it's up to you to build up each of these meters to unlock new interactions which, in turn, allow for greater intimacy. In the biz we call this kind of cycle "feeding the monkey." Start by teasing and telling each other jokes then move on to talking about hobbies. Once you've managed that, you can start kissing and fooling around on the couch before finally hitting pay dirt and spending some time under the sheets. (Until you reach full intimacy, you sleep Dick Van Dyke-style in separate beds.) Though you're presumably going for the gold here, you can't really neglect your friendship and romance meters either as they influence your intimacy as well.

Singles: Flirt up your Life Cheats

This involves editing a game file, so make a back-up of the file prior to making changes.

Go to the /Singles/Config directory in your game folder. Locate the Game.* file and open it using a text editor (such as Notepad). Scroll down the notepad and locate the following lines:

# level of nudity lon = (there should be a number here)

Change the number so the two lines look like:

# level of nudity lon = 10

Be sure to save the file as what it was (and not save as, which only allows for TXT and other non-game cfg files). If you're still not seeing anything, it's probably because you haven't bought a dresser yet. Buy one, and click on it to bring up the appropriate command to shuck off all clothing.

==============
10.1 Tutorial
==============

The tutorial begins with the female or rainbow mode characters entering the
flat where the male or pink mode character is waiting. The following dialog
appears. (Him indicates the male or pink mode character, Her indicates the
female or rainbow mode character. Game dialog indicates instuction or comments
not spoken by either character)

Her> I think that's everything.
Him> You sure you've got enough boxes?
Her> Don't tell me I've worn you out already?
Him> I've a bit left in reserve, what do you have in mind?
Her> Well, you could give me the tour.
Him> I'll be happy to show you everything, if the tip's big enough?

The male character walks to the living room area and the following game dialog
appears.

Game dialog> Right, let's get started. To follow [Male character's name] into
the living room click on this text box to get rid of the pesky thing, then
click on an empty space next to [Male character's name].

After dismissing the dialog, you'll be controlling the female character. Left
click on the question mark by the male character to proceed to the following
dialog.

Her> It's a lot better than the last place I was in.
Him> Wait till you see this.

The male character wallks to another point in the living room and the dialog
continues:

Him> Check out the view! You can see all the way downtown. And into number
28's bedroom. It's incredible, you wouldn't think they'd be that flexible at
seventy. Not that I've been watching.

Again left click on the question mark beside the male character to continue
the dialog:

Game dialog> Want to change your view of the flat? Then press the middle mouse
button or mouse wheel and hold it down. Now wiggle that mouse about a bit
baby.
Game dialog> You don't have a middle mouse button? No problem, just use your
cursor keys (the pointy arrow ones) and Page Up/Page Down - Those are your
magic buttons of movement.
Game dialog> Right, beginner's stuff over, let's get serious. Want to move
your view round the flat? Then hold down the right button and move the mouse,
then you can use the mouse wheel to zoom in on things. Yes, and that does
include people in the shower.

The male character goes to the kitchen area are this text appears:

Game dialog> Ok, test time. Let's see if you've got all the moves. Hold down
the mouse wheel and move round until you can see [Male character's name]. Now
go over to {him/(pink mode)her}.

Adjust the camera angle as per the instructions in the preceding dialog and
click on the question mark beside the male character. This dialog appears:

Him> When I've got the money I'll put in all the amenities. You know, new TV
and sofa in here, some hotties for the bedroom. The basics.
Him> Right now, this tour guide's gotta crash.

The male character sits down at the kitchen table. This text appears:

Him> You make yourself at home. Have a look around. The bathroom's over there.
Maybe you could freshen up to start with?

Four question marks appear through out the flat. One is in one of the
bedrooms, another in the bathroom, another between the kitchen table and the
kitchen appliances, and the last between the kitchen table and the window.

Click on the question mark in the bathroom first. This dialog appears:

Her> This place could do with washing down, but then catching my nice 'I've
just carried a hundred boxes' sweaty smell, so could I.
Game dialog> Hygiene is pretty important. If you smell, or the rooms smell,
then your roommate will start thinking about leaving.
Game dialog> Everything in here works. Try washing [Female character's name]'s
hands in the sink (click on the sink and then the 'wash hands' button). This
will improve [Female character's name]'s hygiene. You'll see the body
indicator go up as the germs go down.

Click on the sink and then click on "Wash Hands". This dialog appears:

Her> That's better, but these clothes smell like a fat man's sneakers. Better
get my ass to the bedroom and change before my new roommate thinks I'm an
armpit nightmare.

Click on the question mark in the bedroom to see this dialog:

Her> Basic, but at least there are no cockroaches.
Her> I think I'm going to like it here.
Game dialog> Guess what?! You keep your clothes in the chest of drawers. Click
on the chest (the wooden one that is) and pick what to wear.

Click on the dresser and Click on one of the female characters outfits. If
you select Naked, Underwear, or Towel the female character will get shy when
approaching the male character and will cover herself up. This behaviour will
continue for both characters until their relationship strengthens, for a
character you're not currently controlling they will run to a dresser and
change into something else. Click on either the swimsuit or the casual
outfit.

The following dialog appears after an outfit has been chosen:

Her> Great! Daisy fresh and ready to impress. Think I'll check out the kitchen
next...

Click on the question mark between the kitchen table and the appliances. The
following text will appear:

Her> Where did you get this stove? From a dumpster?
Game dialog> Just like in real life, furniture and appliances wear out. To
check if the stove still works, click it and switch it on with the handily
labelled 'switch on' button.

Click on the stove, and click "Switch on". The stove will explode. The
following dialog appears.

Her> Heyyyy! Is this whole place boobytrapped?
Him> What did you expect for the rent, Buckingham Palace? I'll fix that later,
but there are a couple of house rules I want to tell you first.

Walk to the question mark by the male character to see the following text:

Him> Take a seat.
Game dialog> To sit down, click on the free chair and select "Take a load
off".

Click on the unoccupied chair at the kitchen table and click "Take a load
off". The following dialog comes up:

Her> These house rules don't involve laughing at your jokes or {stroking
things/(rainbow mode)getting you off}, do they?
Him> That's not a rule, that's an added bonus! Look. I just want to make sure
you do your share of the cooking and cleaning. Oh, and can you unpack the rest
of your things before Monday? I start back then.
Him> In the meantime, you need a hand moving anything - underwear, sex toys,
just give me a yell.
Her> You're funnier when you don't try, you know. But the hint's taken, I'll
empty these boxes.
Game dialog> Ever wanted X-Ray vision? Well now you've got it. Click on a box
and click on the 'Unpack a Box' button to see what is inside.

Both character get up. The male goes over to the smoking stove to fix it while
the female go to the entrance beside the boxes. Click on one of the boxes and
click "Unpack a Box".

The following text appears:

Game dialog> Time to play changing rooms. You're now in the 'Decorating Mode'.
Just left-click to move unpacked items round the flat. If the item gets shy
and starts to play invisible dooberry, then you can't put it down. Try
somewhere else. Go on, give it a whirl.

You'll be taken in to decorate mode with the boxes contents. Left click to
place the item. If its something that need to rest on a table you can use the
kitchen table for now. The following text appears after the item is placed.

Game dialog> Put something in the wrong place? No worries. Just click it again
and move it where you want it to go. All without the hassle of actually having
to lift the thing.
Game dialog> Facing the wrong way? We've thought of that too. Just click the
item, then click and hold the left button to make the item give you a twirl.

Left click on the item you just placed (or another item it the flat), try
rotating it as described in the preceding dialog. Left click to set it down
again. The following text will now appear.

'Needs' button. You'll find that hiding in the bottom left corner of the
screen with it
