Sequence combines elements of both rhythm and role-playing games to create an entirely unique experience. Join Ky on his ascent of a mysterious Tower, guided onward by a mysterious girl named Naia. Encounter deadly monsters and ridiculous characters, and discover the grand scheme behind Ky's mysterious imprisonment.
Sequence is, on paper, an interesting concept. You take a rhythm game (in this case, you play with a control pad or a keyboard, not by stomping on particular areas of the floor), slap on a whole mess of RPG elements and a lot of unnecessarily snarky dialogue and voila: you've got yourself a "hybrid" game, right? Well, not quite.
For all the RPG elements put together here (and there is a laundry list), at its core Sequence is really just a game about hitting the right keys at the right time in accordance with the backing tracks. The mostly keyboard-driven electronica is decent, but because it requires so much grinding, I quickly got tired of hearing the same chunks of the same songs in the same battles pretty quickly.
At first glance the gameplay seems very similar to what you're used to from a rhythm game. The twist is that each rhythm challenge involves "fighting" a monster – which amounts to you facing three separate rhythm screens at once, rather than just one. One of these allows you to defend yourself from the monster's attacks by matching keystrokes to the beat, another allows you to cast spells with various effects, and another allows you to regenerate mana. You can only have one screen "active" at once, and you cycle through them throughout the battle. This, needless to say, becomes extremely complex at higher levels. Not only do you have to hit the right keys at the right time, but at any given time you've got to keep an eye on three screens at once, and in the active screen, you're likely to have multiple simultaneous keystrokes to hit.
For some folks this will be a fun challenge. But I've played piano and guitar my whole life, and despite being a dexterous sort of chap, Sequence had me gasping for air in short order. If you get past the learning curve, you'll get to delve into some of Sequence's bells and whistles. First among these is a complex inventory system that involves obtaining items from killing bad guys, then breaking down those items into their component parts, then combining those component parts into new items – but only at the cost of experience, which you also get in combat. Also, there's only a percentage chance that any particular combination will actually work, depending on how much experience you're willing to spend, and the sliding scale of percentages is a very subtle balancing act. If this is all starting to sound more like a calculus exam than a rhythm game, well, let's just say that complexity was definitely the watchword when Sequence's design team had their weekly meetings.
In between the overly-complex rhythm sequences, you'll be treated to a plot that doesn't make a lot of sense, told by the most self-satisfied, snarky characters since every episode of Glee ever. Between the doofus-y main character, Ky, and his too-cool-for-school guidewoman, Naia, I wanted to punch the voice-actors in the face in no time. If more time had been spent on quality dialogue and character development, and less on elaborate gameplay mechanics, Sequence might've felt more like a real RPG and less like a rhythm game that's trying to be the coolest rhythm game on the block.

II. Introduction and Acknowledgements [INTR]
--------------------------------------------------
Sequence is a neat little indie game by Iridium Studios. It's an interesting
combination of DDR-esque rhythm games and rpgs. If you're a fan of either, you
should try it out.
There are two reasons I put this together. One is that the synthesis system
sometimes requires you to go hunt down components, and they can be a bit of a
pain to find. The other reason is that there's very little information of this
type out there to find, at least at this writing.
I could not have done this without the help of the Steam forum for this
game. Particularly this thread -
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2395714
I will do my best to update this faq as the original thread evolves and
more information becomes available, but the above thread is going to have the
most recent information.
Drozd on the forum did most of the original work, and graciously allowed me
to use what he put together as the backbone of this. Spellbreak got the drop
list for the sixth and seventh floors, as well as one of the Purger's items.
And the guy who runs Iridium Studios himself posted the formulas for the tarot
cards and the antigravity dice.
Eventually, I'll add some more info to this, like enemy and boss writeups,
a spell list, and a list of what sort of experience you'll get for desynthing
things. And maybe a couple other things if I can get them worked out properly.
But this is a good start for now.
===============================================================================
III. Gear Chart [GEAR]
--------------------------------------------------
While your stats do go up as you level, the primary way to improve them is
by equipping gear - especially since if you fail several synth checks you could
wind up several levels lower than you started. The bonuses from gear, however,
are constant.
There are three types of gear: weapons, which primarily improve your Offense
stat; armor, which primarily improves your Defense stat; and accessories which
could do anything. Gear that you get or make higher up in the Tower not only
has higher bonuses, but could improve more than one stat.
The chart lists the item, how you get it, the first floor it's available on,
and what bonuses it gives. Items that are enemy drops or are synthesized will
be available as soon as you can get them. Boss items are a little different.
You'll actually acquire them on the floor before what is listed here, but since
you automatically move to the next floor after beating each boss, you won't be
able to equip their drop until the floor listed.
(I have not completed the game yet, so I haven't seen which floors the later
bosses are on. I'll fix this as soon as I get to them. There are also some
things that I don't know where they come from.)
Two items list 'Naia' as the source. These are the basic weapons and armor
you are given at the start of the game; you don't have to do anything special
for them.

Addele's Tarrot Cards - Increases item acquisition rate at the cost of battle
efficacy. Tarot Cards give you two rolls to obtain the item. The new
probability is equal to 1 - (1 - p)^2. Tarot Cards cut your four primary stats
by 1/3.
Antigravity Dice - Drastically increases item acquisition at the cost of battle
efficacy. Antigravity Dice give you three rolls to obtain the item. The new
probability is equal to 1 - (1 - p)^3. Antigravity Dice cut your four primary
stats by 1/2.

IV. Enemy Drop Chart [DROP]
--------------------------------------------------
There are three enemies on each floor, not including the boss. Each enemy
has three items it can drop, either peices of gear or synthesis ingredients, at
different probabilities. As far as I can tell, there's a separate roll for each
drop category, so you could get a rare or treasured item from a battle, but not
a common one. You can also get all three. It's entirely random.
The enemy select screen will show what each one can drop and the probability
for each level of rarity, once you've gotten the drop once. That way you can
just fight whatever drops the item you need until you get it.
Boss drops are not listed. It's been my experience that they only have a
Treasured item to drop, but the drop rate is 100%, and you can't fight them
again after beating them. (And if you're synthesizing gear, you'll often have
better equipment than you'll get from them.) Check the gear chart if you want
their drop.

V. Synthesis [SYN_]
--------------------------------------------------
Most of your gear and spells are created through synthesis. Naia will give
you a set of recipes on each floor. You *could* just synthesize the key for
the next floor and move on, but you can often make better gear than you can
get as drops, and that's the only way to get most of your spells.
Additionally, there's a set of key items called Inhibitors that will make
leveling and ingredient hunting MUCH easier, so you probably want to make those
as soon as you can.
You can desynth gear and raw materials to get experience points. Since you
have to pay experience to synth items in the first place, this can help if you
have a run of bad luck and end up losing levels. Experience gems are listed in
your raw materials section, but they're not used for anything; the ONLY reason
they exist is to give you experience. If you have a bunch of extra materials
once you've finished a floor, go ahead and desynth them; you can come back if
you need the items for later recipes.
While you can get raw materials again, you only get recipes once, so don't
desynth things you've made unless you're SURE you want to lose them forever.
Additionally, do NOT desynth Half Prism and Prism Half if you make them; you
might actually not synth those at all until you reach the 7th floor.
Each recipe has a level associated with it; I'm not sure but I think that's
the level you're recommended to be at before you try.
I currently don't have the synthesis recipes in a nice chart like the other
things, mostly because I haven't figured out how to format it yet. If I do,
I'll change the list.
