About The Game

Three distinct campaigns comprise Resident Evil 6. Each scenario features partnered gameplay, first popularized in Resident Evil 0 and again in Resident Evil 5. Diehard fans of the series will recognize some of Raccoon City’s veterans as playable characters: Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield have their own storylines, and even Sherry Birkin from Resident Evil 2, who is now a government agent, appears as a playable character. These familiar faces are partnered with brand new characters: Leon investigates the zombification of the U.S. president alongside secret service agent Helena Harper, Chris Redfield explores the fictional Chinese city of Lanshiang with sharpshooter Piers Nivans, and Sherry Birkin finds an unlikely ally in Jake Muller, son of the series’ recently deceased supervillain Albert Wesker, as the pair are chased across the snowy state of Edonia by a mechanical bioweapon called the Ustanak. Capcom promises to deliver a multiplayer experience in Resident Evil 6 including four-player cooperative gameplay and a competitive mode which has not yet been revealed.

Resident Evil 6 Review

By Gus McZeal |

The sixth installment of Capcom’s hugely popular survival horror franchise—arguably the series that defined the survival horror genre—comes to Western shores on October 2nd, 2012. With a production team of over 600 people, Resident Evil 6 is Capcom’s most ambitious project to date, promising to fix some persistent problems with the franchise while taking the series, now well over a decade old, in a brand new direction. Will the game inject new life into the walking dead, or is it time to put a bullet in the head of a genre that has shambled on well past its lifespan?

The biggest change to the series in terms of gameplay is pretty simple, and long overdue. Characters can now run and shoot at the same time! While some veteran fans might complain that this detracts from the tense experience of the game, the fact that players won’t have to stand still as slavering mutant dogs charge them is both more realistic and frankly, more exciting. Each character has a unique set of melee abilities that can be utilized at any time. Dwindling ammo supplies become less of a problem when you can decapitate zombies with a roundhouse kick to the face. Combined with a new dodging system granting players increased mobility, these changes mark a transition from survival horror to what Capcom calls “dramatic horror,” which blends the series’ characteristic scares with action-oriented gameplay. This marks a definite evolution for Resident Evil, although it remains to be seen how truly groundbreaking these changes will be.

Three distinct campaigns comprise Resident Evil 6. Each scenario features partnered gameplay, first popularized in Resident Evil 0 and again in Resident Evil 5. Diehard fans of the series will recognize some of Raccoon City’s veterans as playable characters: Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield have their own storylines, and even Sherry Birkin from Resident Evil 2 appears as a playable character; she’s now a grown-up government agent with some big guns of her own. There are tons of characters in this game, so it’s awesome that Capcom has promised to deliver a multiplayer experience in Resident Evil 6 including four-player cooperative gameplay and a competitive mode which has not yet been revealed.

Resident Evil 6’s high octane gameplay and sheer number characters give the game a distinctly different atmosphere to previous titles in the series; you won’t find yourself wandering alone through a dilapidated mansion. Chris Redfield’s campaign begins with him and Piers leading a SWAT team’s investigation into recent outbreak of bioterrorism in China. A giant invisible snake slowly kills off characters, ramping up the player’s sense of dread as the team dwindles to nothing. The game’s improved sound design and “scare lighting” appeal to the players’ senses, causing them to question every rustle and flickering shadow, demonstrated in a recent gameplay video where Leon explores a zombie-infested subway station. Even though Capcom is changing its formula to suit the needs of the video game market, it’s clear that they want preserve the feelings of terror we’ve come to expect from Resident Evil. This series is finally mutating, and that’s a good thing.
