About The Game

The latest title in CryTek’s Crysis series is set 24 years after the original game in 2047 AD. New York City is quarantined in a gigantic nanodome, supposedly to prevent the escape of a deadly alien race, but Crysis 3 protagonist Laurence “Prophet” Barnes knows that C.E.L.L., the “benevolent” organization responsible for the city’s containment, wants to study the alien technology unhindered for their own sinister purposes. Equipped with the latest in cloaking technology and wielding a high-velocity bow, Prophet navigates the urban jungle, hunting down C.E.L.L. operatives while attempting to solve the mystery of the Ceph’s origins. Crysis 3 will be released in February of 2013 on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Crysis 3 Review

By Gus McZeal |

It’s impossible not to be reminded of Predator when looking at trailers for Crytek’s new title, Crysis 3.  Jungle environments, invisibility suits, bowhunting, gunplay and intense action—the similarities are uncanny! This time, however, the protagonist plays the role of unseen hunter, stalking the urban jungle of New York City in search of alien technology and the military forces who seek to appropriate this technology for their own nefarious devices.

The game, set in the year 2047 AD, features a similar reconstruction of New York to the one seen in Crysis 2, but with a twist. In the 24 years since Crysis 2, New York City has become a giant “green space” as a result of its containment within a gigantic nanodome designed to accelerate biological processes. C.E.L.L., a megalomaniacal military company, claims to have contained the city in this way to exterminate a colony of aliens known as the Ceph, but really, C.E.L.L. simply wants to keep others away from the alien technology so they can research it and use it to take over the world. You’ll be playing as Laurence “Prophet” Barnes, leader of the Raptor Team from the original Crysis, who ventures into the nanodome to explore the New York jungle and put a stop to C.E.L.L.’s sinister plans.

As with every Crysis game, Crysis 3’s graphic look simply incredible thanks to Crytek’s amazing CryENGINE 3. New York’s urban landscape positively seethes with organic life. China Town has become a murky swamp, with shafts of sunlight piercing the dense canopy blanketing the city, illuminating motes of pollen and insects flitting through the air. The water physics are top-notch: one particularly incredible gameplay trailer, which you can see in the adjoining video section of this page, shows the destruction of a dam, the water tearing through the cityscape, uprooting trees and concrete, which conveniently demonstrates the game’s impressive destructible environments.

Crysis 3’s environments can be destroyed, but they can also be used to destroy. Players will be able to uproot lamp posts and use them as giant clubs, or rip the doors off abandoned cars to use as shields. Defensive options will be critical considering Crysis 3’s substantial battery of weapons, which, for the first time, will include alien technology. The game’s signature weapon is a bow and arrow, with a number of different arrowhead attachments. Electrical arrows can be used to stun your enemies, while the exploding arrow will turn your target into a living bomb capable of killing everyone around him in a fiery explosion.

Based on what Crytek have revealed about two of the game’s eight different multiplayer modes, Crysis 3 looks like a game that will be just as compelling to play with your friends as it will alone. Fans of Crysis 2 should be pleased to know that “Crash Site” mode is returning to the game. This King-of-the-Hill style scenario pits teams of eight against one another on a map featuring the wreckage of alien technology. Players gain points by standing on the wreckage, which is geared to explode after a certain period of time. When the pod blows up, another will crash land elsewhere on the map, encouraging continuous movement. Combined with the bow’s exploding arrows, this gametype looks to be a pretty incendiary experience!

The second revealed mode, “Hunter,” brings us back to Predator: 2 players with increased health, stealth suits and powerful bows are pitted against 14 regular players posing as C.E.L.L. troopers, whose only real advantages is in their numbers. Armed with Aliens-style beeping detectors and stealth-interrupting EMP grenades, the C.E.L.L. troopers must survive the hunters’ onslaught. Killed troopers turn into hunters themselves, and the game turns into a frantic battle for survival against an increasing number of powerful, invisible enemies. This will certainly be one of the more popular game modes when Crysis 3 is released on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February of 2013.
