About The Game

Bohemia Interactive’s Arma 3 is a gritty tactical shooter designed to simulate real-life war conditions. You’ll play as British Special Forces Captain Scott Miller, a NATO soldier fighting for survival in the wilderness of two Greek Islands, Limnos and Stratos, after his battalion is cut down by enemy gunfire. The Arma series emphasizes strategic gameplay that differs from the “run in, guns blazing” approach seen in many shooters today, and also contains survivalist elements that force you to hunt for food and water to stay alive. Arma 3 was originally slated for a Q4 2012 release, but has been pushed back until Q1 of 2013. Currently, Bohemia Interactive states that the game will be available for Windows at launch.

Game Features:

  • • State-of-the-art lighting effects force players to make tactical decisions regarding their equipment and positioning: equip a muzzle suppressor to hide gun flashes in poorly lit areas, and avoid facing the sun in firefights or you’ll be at a disadvantage
  • • Fully moddable game: DayZ was a massively popular mod for Arma 2, and there will certainly be fan-made projects of a similarly epic scope applied to Arma 3
  • • Fully destructible environments
  • • Massive open-world environment, with over 290 square kilometers of terrain to explore

Arma 3 Review

By Gus McZeal |

Arma 3 is the latest war simulator from Bohemia Interactive. Get out your tissues: the company recently broke the news that they’re delaying Arma 3’s release window from Q4 2012 to the beginning of 2013. Look on the bright side, though… this just gives you more time with DayZ!

For people unfamiliar with the series, Arma 3 is a tactical shooter focusing on gritty realism. The game is set in a near future version of the Mediterranean under siege from advancing Iranian soldiers. You’ll be playing as a tough-as-nails NATO soldier whose battalion has been cut down by enemy forces, and you’ll have to survive on your own in the game’s vast terrain until you find your allies. Arma 3 features two Greek islands, Limnos and Stratos, which have a combined area of over 290km2. This game is HUGE, featuring fully destructible environments, incredibly realistic lighting effects, and an entirely new mode of combat taking place underwater.

Bohemia Interactive’s press releases definitely make underwater battles in Arma 3 seem like an immersive experience (no pun intended). The water looks super realistic: players looking upwards will see the sun reflected in the surface, as well as the silhouettes of airborne vehicles above the ocean. I even saw some cute sea turtles swimming around! Players can jump into a wetsuit for more efficient swimming, or take advantage of one of the game’s underwater vehicles, the SDV, to get into the fray even more quickly. There’s even a specially designed gun, the SDAR, which can be used underwater, the bullets leaving trails of bubbles in their wake. The aquatic aspects of Arma 3 aren’t gimmicky: they offer tactical advantages, such using submarine periscopes to scout out areas for airstrikes, or providing opportunities to sneak behind enemy lines.

Because it’s a tactical shooter, Arma 3 requires some finesse: bros, if you run in with all guns blazing, it’ll all be over way too fast, and that’s never fun for anyone (unless you’re talking Call of Duty). Bohemia Interactive has introduced a lot of new graphical features to the game that have a subtle effect on gameplay, particularly with lighting, as seen in one of the company’s recent press releases. Lighting transforms the way players will approach combat strategically, forcing them to equip a muzzle suppressor to eliminate flashes of gunfire in poorly lit areas, or to shift positions if they find themselves sniping into the sun. The game’s new menus allow for on-the-fly weapon customization, allowing players to adapt to any situation provided their equipment is well-chosen. The weapons feel much more realistic thanks to brand new sound design, literally giving you more bang for your buck.

As with the other two games in the Arma series, Arma 3 will be fully moddable: DayZ fans, rejoice, and expect a sequel soon! Arma 3 is set for release early next year, so unfortunately you guys with itchy trigger fingers will have to wait just a little longer. I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait.
